The Bearing Repair Process:

Step 1

PRELIMINARY QUOTE

BSC can provide a preliminary estimate for bearing modification or bearing repair by providing the bearing part number or the brand, type, and dimensions. More accurate preliminary quotes are available through on-site inspections by a BSC representative.

Step 2

DISASSEMBLY, CLEANING, AND INSPECTION AT BSC

BSC will cover inbound freight to our manufacturing facility in Pittsburgh, PA for free inspection and quote. The bearing will be carefully disassembled and thoroughly cleaned. Every critical dimension will be measured and compared to manufacturers specification. Damage modes will be identified to help determine root cause of any fatigue present.

Step 3

INBOUND INSPECTION REPORT & QUOTE PROVIDED TO CUSTOMER

The customer is provided with the inbound inspection report and final quote . Work does not proceed until a purchase order is received from the customer. The bearing can be returned to the customer or scrapped upon request at any time.

Step 4

REPAIR – TYPE 1, TYPE 2, TYPE 3, OR TYPE 4 (Identified in Section Above)

The type of repair is determined during inspection and is based on the amount of work required to restore the bearing back to manufacturers specifications. The cost of the repair is based off the type of repair.

Step 5

OUTBOUND INSPECTION

Once work is complete, each critical dimension is measured and recorded in an outbound inspection report. This outbound inspection report is provided to the customer.

Step 6

PRESERVATION & PACKAGING – NEW 12 MONTH WARRANTY APPLIED

Each bearing is coated in preservative, wrapped, and packaged or crated for protection. Each label will have the bearing OEM, part number, and serial number. A new 12 month warranty is applied for manufacturing and workmanship.

MACHINING

BSC will manufacture new components as necessary, such as rollers and raceways, in order to repair bearings back to their manufacturers specification. Raw material is received in either forged rings, tubing, bar stock, or centrifugally cast rings. BSC is equipped with modern CNC lathes and milling machines that soft machine components to a machine size, which allows for additional stock for distortion during the heat treat process. All operations are performed according to process sheets to keep processes consistent. Finished machined parts are identified and sent to heat treat.

HEAT TREATING

Most bearing components are hardened and tempered to provide either a through hardened part with hardness range of 58 to 62 Rockwell C scale, or a case carburized part with a relatively soft core and hard range.

Case carburized parts are less likely to fracture during impact or under load compared to through hardened material.

High carbon steels such as 52100 and 440C are used for through hardening and lower carbon steels such as 8620, 3310, and 9310 are used for case carburized parts. There are several different criterial in the bearing application which determines material selection and heat treat requirements.

GRINDING

After receipt of parts from heat treat, the parts are identified, inspected, and then ground to precision size. Generally grinding takes place in three different phases, namely surface grinding, bore grinding, and OD grinding. BSC will also re-grind used components through our remanufacturing process. This provides the rollers with a new rolling surface when reusing good components. Depending on the complexity of the parts, they may require special grinding equipment and fixturing. BSC has conventional bore and OD grinders, vertical grinders, and CNC grinders. All processes are recorded, inspected, and documented as per the process sheet.

ASSEMBLY PRESERVATION, & PACKAGING

Once all the components have passed dimensional and magnetic particle inspection, they are assembled, checking for running clearances, dipped in a rust preventative, wrapped in moisture resistant wrap, and boxed for shipment. The boxes are labeled with the bearing number, date code, and other relative information depending on the bearing design.

Repair FAQ:

A bearing can typically be repaired up to three times before it has to be scrapped. The number of repairs depends on how much material is removed from the raceways during the re-grind process as well as other factors such as case depth on case carburized materials.

Bearings are repaired by restoring their OEM specification, effectively restoring the full useful life of the bearing. We replace worn components such as rollers and cages, while machining fatigued raceways provides a new rolling surface.

Yes! The capacity of a bearing is determined by the size and quantity of rollers – which remains the same. In fact, most repaired bearings use larger rollers to accommodate for the clearance lost during the re-grind process. Larger rollers means that a repaired bearing carries a higher capacity rating than when the bearing was new.

BSC provides a 12 month warranty for manufacturing and workmanship on all repaired bearings giving you confidence that the bearing will perform as expected.

BSC uses locally sourced material through supplier partnerships out of our Pittsburgh, PA manufacturing facility. All material is ordered specific to each job to ensure quality and content for the requirements of the application.

Bearings are restored back to manufacturers specification. Required bearing fit and clearance are maintained through the bearing repair process.

No. Bearings are repaired back to manufacturers specification and all critical dimensions are restored or maintained through the repair process.

Yes. BSC manufactures all bearing components such as rollers, cages, and raceways at our +88,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Pittsburgh, PA.

BSC can repair bearings from 2″ diameter all the way up to 60″ diameter. Typically, bearings under 4-6″ are not economical for repair.
