Quality Control in Bearing Manufacturing: Ensuring Consistency and Reliability
Material choice, dimensional accuracy, and surface finish are three of the most critical aspects to control for in manufacturing high-precision industrial bearings. These parameters directly impact the efficiency, reliability, and longevity of highly complex machines in the factory and in the field. That’s why meticulous quality control in bearing manufacturing and process management is crucial to overall performance.
Even small deviations in tolerances or other minor manufacturing errors will leave your equipment vulnerable to performance issues, up to and including catastrophic bearing failure. Likewise, subpar raw materials open up the door to premature wear and reduced service life. In either case, bearing quality issues can quickly spiral into much more costly downtime for your equipment.
Whether we’re manufacturing new bearings or repairing/remanufacturing your existing components, Bearing Service Company ensures superior quality every step of the way – from raw material selection to final packaging. On that note, let’s take a look at what goes into our rigorous quality management system certified to ISO 9001 standards.
The Critical Quality Control Processes for Industrial Bearing Manufacturing:
- High-Performance Bearing Materials – BSC uses high-performance steels and ceramic materials. Using properly durable, wear-optimized materials is crucial to ensure bearings continually run smooth and reach the expected service life. Lower-quality materials (or ones suboptimal to the application at hand) typically yield increased friction, higher wear rates, and have inclusions that provide a greater chance for faster failure.
- Confirming Hardness and Toughness – Materials and manufactured components must be tested to achieve high hardness and toughness in order to meet the expected wear rates and service life. Especially when it comes to ball bearing and raceway components, hardness and toughness largely determine the bearing’s reliability to withstand heavy loads and resist damage.
- Maintaining Dimensional Accuracy – Bearings must have precise dimensions and exceptionally close tolerances, especially in terms of the inner/outer diameters, as well as the ball diameter. Even seemingly minor missed tolerances can introduce excessive friction, vibration, and wear characteristics that lead to poor performance and/or premature failure.
- Achieving Smooth Surface Finishes – The entire surface of the raceways and ball bearing components must be exceptionally smooth. Any roughness naturally increases friction, wear, and generates extra heat as the bearing is in motion. RMS finishes on raceways and moving parts are always calculated and tracked.
How BSC Ensures Reliable, High-Performance Industrial Bearings:
Raw Material Inspection
All materials are carefully sourced through BSC’s reliable and traceable vendor network. Raw materials and components undergo various inspection procedures to determine chemical composition, hardness, purity, and cleanliness. Choosing reliable raw materials also means choosing the best material for the application at hand, which is where BSC’s 93+ years of manufacturing experience and materials science comes into play.
Precision Dimensionality and Tolerances
We manufacture many industrial bearing components to extremely high-precision tolerances. To confirm dimensional accuracy, we utilize multiple coordinate measuring machines with a measuring accuracy to 0.00005. Additional tools such as roundness testers and profilometers allow us to further confirm dimensional accuracy.
Heat Treatment and Metallurgical Control
Many industrial bearings undergo additional heat treatment for hardening tempering. These processes allow us to enhance bearing strength and wear resistance to extend service life and/or meet high-performance machine requirements. Our meticulous quality control process includes hardness testing, microstructure analysis, and surface integrity checks after heat treatment.
Proper Assembly and Lubrication
Our facility’s use of controlled environments ensure foreign particles, debris, and moisture don’t enter the bearing during assembly. Correct lubrication volume and type are also carefully verified. These aspects are just as critical to supporting bearing performance/longevity as the preceding manufacturing processes. See our article Tips for Avoiding Industrial Bearing Contamination and Failure for more information on proper bearing lubrication and assembly.
Final Inspection and Packaging
